Medicare is a Federal health insurance program for people over the age of 65, and groups of younger people who have certain disabilities. One can attain Medicare regardless of their income, medical history, or current health status. Medicare covers a variety of health services, including both inpatient and outpatient hospital care, physician services, and prescription Medications.
Part A is your hospital coverage and covers inpatient hospital stays, nursing facility stays, some home health visits, and hospice care. Part B covers physician visits, outpatient services, preventive services, and some home health visits.
Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap, help close the gaps in coverage. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for health care services and supplies. A supplement can help with copays and deductibles.
Part C, or Medicare Advantage is offered by private insurance companies to provide a medicare plan as an alternative to the original health insurance plan. This can be a health maintenance organization (HMO) or preferred provider organization (PPO).
Part D plans cover prescription drugs through private plans that contract with Medicare, including stand-alone prescription drug plans (PDPs) and Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage.
